Appartement renovation 3, Zürich
In 2025, we completed the full renovation of an apartment located in the im Sträler residential buildings in Zurich, a complex dating from the 1970s. The project focused on bringing the apartment up to modern standards while respecting the architectural character of the building and improving the quality of everyday living.
From the outset, the objective was to create a balanced and functional living environment that combines comfort, craftsmanship and thoughtful spatial planning. Following the necessary preparatory work, the apartment was entirely reimagined. The kitchen and bathrooms were fully redesigned to meet contemporary standards, combining durable materials with practical layouts tailored to the needs of the owners.
A central element of the renovation was the installation of an acoustic flooring system designed to improve sound comfort within the apartment. The new wooden flooring was installed on Fermacell boards laid over a dense stone wool insulation layer specifically chosen for impact sound reduction. The entire floor construction was built as a floating structure and carefully separated from all surrounding walls so that no impact sound could be transmitted into the concrete walls of the building. This solution significantly improves acoustic comfort within the apartment while minimizing sound transmission to neighboring units.
The renovation also included the design and integration of custom built furniture throughout the apartment, particularly in the entrance corridor (Flur), the master bedroom (Elternzimmer) and the storage room (Réduit). These elements were carefully designed to maximize storage while maintaining a clean and coherent interior aesthetic.
The spatial organization of the living area was subtly refined. The dining area, originally connected to the living room, was separated to create a dedicated office space. To maintain a strong visual connection and preserve the flow of natural light, a full room height door was integrated. When opened, it allows daylight from the office, positioned on the sunrise side of the apartment, to extend into the living room which faces the sunset. This intervention allows natural light to pass through the apartment throughout the day, enhancing the brightness and atmosphere of the living space.
Beyond the visible changes, the renovation also included a complete upgrade of the electrical system as well as the replacement of all interior and exterior doors, ensuring that the apartment meets contemporary technical standards while maintaining a coherent architectural language.
The result is a carefully crafted transformation that respects the original structure of the im Sträler buildings while elevating the apartment to modern standards of comfort, acoustics and functionality.
